New York Times best-selling author and prize-winning poet, Carole Boston Weatherford visited Manchester Elementary School on Thursday, February 20. Ms. Weatherford entertained students, staff, parents, and guests by reading some of her favorite works. Weatherford brought to life historical events of the civil rights’ movement by engaging the audience with her book Freedom on the Menu: The Story of the Greensboro Sit-ins. Members of the crowd chimed in to echo lines from the story as she passionately read her 2005 work. She also read charming poems about urban life from her Sidewalk Chalk: Poems of the City. The students were harmoniously ringing bells and making sound effects as Weatherford read about bustling activity with ice cream trucks and children in the neighborhood from “Chocolate Buddies”. Her poem “Eat at Moe’s” from the same work, enthralled all with mouth-watering descriptions of old-fashioned diner-style food. After the presentation, there were opportunities for photographs, and a book-signing. The event was highlighted with door prizes from the author: 20 copies of Freedom on the Menu: The Story of the Greensboro Sit-ins.  Refreshments of submarine sandwiches, chips, and lemonade followed the close of the program.
